With collegiate conference and national championship season in full swing, there are several “watch lists” for player of the year awards. On the women’s side, the ANNIKA Award is awarded to the top female collegiate player of the year. And this year, there are a couple of former Spirit Players on the watch list: 2015 Spirit Player Bronte Law and 2013 Spirit Player, Leonna Maguire.
1. Bronte Law (Last week: 1)
2015-16 Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 1
Results: WIN, PING/ASU Invitational; WIN, Stanford Intercollegiate hosted by Condoleezza Rice; 2, Bruin Wave Invitational; T-4, Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge; T-4, Nanea Pac-12 Preview; T-21, Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate; T-25, ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M; 3-1 in match play at SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms
The buzz: Law missed out on the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic to play in the ANA Inspiration (a pretty nice opportunity even if she missed the cut). But she was right back at it the next week, as she posted a three-shot win at the PING/ASU Invitational. It was Law’s second win of the year, and while her resume was already real strong entering the spring, she’s really heating up at the right time, too.
2. Leona Maguire (Last week: 2)
2015-16 Golfweek/Sagarin Ranking: 4
Results: WIN, Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational; T-4, The Landfall Tradition; T-8, Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge; T-9, ANNIKA Intercollegiate Presented by 3M; T-14, LSU Tiger Golf Classic; T-17, Darius Rucker Intercollegiate
The buzz: Maguire also missed the Liz Murphey for the ANA Inspiration (where she also failed to reach the weekend). She’ll return to action at the ACC Championship, where she’ll need a stellar performance and a Law drop in order to grab back the No. 1 spot.
